5 Horror Movie Icons We Want in ‘Mortal Kombat X’

The Mortal Kombat reboot that released back in 2011 is largely known for successfully reinvigorating gaming’s bloodiest fighting franchise. That’s an impressive achievement, but a decade from now I’ll remember it most fondly for its inclusion of the horror genre’s second prettiest face — Freddy Krueger.

If you’re curious, the prettiest face belongs to Jason Voorhees. I’d climb that tall glass of curdled milk, if I wasn’t positive it’d result in my being swiftly bisected by a machete.

Granted, the Freddy we got was from the abysmal reboot that had released a year prior, replacing the irreplaceable Robert Englund with Jackie Earle Haley. Haley’s an undeniably talented guy, but Englund had two decades to construct an unforgettable character. Haley never stood a chance.

When Mortal Kombat X arrives on April 14, it’ll be followed by DLC, which, I think is safe to assume, will include a handful of new combatants. They’ll likely include some returning fighters, maybe a few original characters, and, if the God-King Ed Boon has been listening to my prayers, one or more of these horror movie characters will join the fight.

That’s a wordy enough introduction, don’t you think? Alright then, let’s go!

  • Kori Batchelor

The xenomorph from the Alien franchise could be pretty sweet.

    • YES!

    • I Am Colossus

      Or 1 of those Engineers

  • Kane Soto

just wondering how much you guys get paid to support The Babadook? i mean seriously thats the dumbest idea for an MK character ever…. id much rather have mick taylor which is about as dumb. seriously the babadook movie was fucking HORRIBLE

    • tyler

Agree. The movie was a notch below fair for a straight to video movie. Only reason most people have heard about it is because it was pretty much the only horror film that got a little attention last year, which is very sad.

      • CTHL

Or… it was a good movie. Crazy illumanti theory, I know.

What’s sad is that despite all the praise, it still didnt get a fraction of the attention shit like Ouija did.

    • Accusing me of including a character from a film I loved because you think I was paid to do so is pretty dumb, too.

  • Jonny_anonymous

Pinhead would be perfect and it the only guest I would likely play as.

  • tyler

Chucky could be all kinds of fun and entertainment. Would love to see some love for Candyman and Captain Spaulding too.

    • Conan

Also the best part of Chucky is he is short so half the moves will go over his head. Also gamers would bitch that he is a cheat character. lol

      • Maxime C

Like the little dragon in Tekken 3 ? Meeh…

  • Bernie Hole

Leatherface, Jason, and Beavis and Butthead

  • Maxime C

Babadook, an icon? Come on BD…

    • Read it. I specifically point out that he’s not an icon (yet).

      • Maxime C

Not an icon yet. Not an icon ever. That’s what I meant.

  • Darkness69

Pinhead and the real Freddy – that’s all I ask!

  • sliceanddice

Pinhead is the only one i really crave to see. “Pain? How dare you use that word.”

  • Victor

Of course I will say Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees hands down….. Another alternative I would say is ” Alien ” he would have some pretty bad ass moves, the tail, the mouth, the height, the acid etc… I feel the ” Alien ” would be a top choice.

  • Jarbloko

NR, should make terrordrome instead just put a special guest character on mkx

    • Brodequin

      Terrordrome is funny…

  • Brodequin

    The Thing creature…

    • Hot damn! Yes, yes, yes.

      • texas evil

Which form? Dog, spider head, Nauls Thing.. better, make them all where you can change into anytime in the game.

      • texas evil

Yet somehow I think The Thing could be unplayable because of his messy form.

  • TheWalkingFlat

    a bunch of hungry critters

  • CTHL

  • Bones Malone

    Let there be SPAWN!

  • Harley Mitchel Dirk

Sam and Mickey Taylor are some pretty weak choices in my opinion. Horror Icons I would like to see in Mortal Kombat are

1: Alien- An obvious choice for me, and fits nicely into the game. A living weapon, the Alien would tear opponents up with it’s claws, tail, and teeth. You also have plenty of Fatality and Brutality options.

Jason Voorhees- Another obvious choice, and another killing machine but of a different build. Jason would physically overpower opponents and cut them to pieces with an assortment of weapons, but a focus on the machete. Plenty of Fatality and Brutality options available here.

Pinhead- I liked this choice of Adam’s. Pinhead would be vulnerable up close but devastating at a distance with his hook chain attack. Some cool Fatality and Brutality options, but a little more limited then my other choices.

Demon(Paranormal Activity)- …. Invisible and occasionally will land a basic punch or leg trip…. Cheaply made and dull to watch, but some will still think it’s the best ever…..

  • I’m amending my list! Now, icons 1-5 are being replaced by Frank Underwood (Oderus can stay there). This comment was sponsored by House of Cards season 3 on Netflix.

  • Adam Palkovits

Out of the choices I’d have to say PINHEAD was the only logical pick for an MK fighter next to GWAR. Mickey is basically a KANO copy type, SAM’s too tiny to be a fighter and they already have the new small character riding a big character to choose. Babadook being scary and shapeshifting don’t count worth shit versus most MK opponents in the ring.

  • paredokz

I think the guy from Jeepers Creepers would be good.

    • I’d second that.

    • ThunderDragoon

Holy crap, that would be amazing! He already has the arsenal and everything. 😀

  • paredokz

Also, I know he’s not a horror character, but I would like to see Marvels Deadpool.

  • Jeremy Wade

jason, pin head, freddy robert e and haley version with different move set and finishers, jeeper creepers, wolfman, dracula, Frankenstein monster , Mr Hyde, Michael myers, ghost rider would cool and blade from marvel comics. night of the demons character angela the original version. killjoy or Stephen kings it. the punisher would be nice as well.

  • Chandler Of-Adelaide

I love Pinhead, I love the Hellraiser movies and I love Mortal Kombat, in saying that, Pinhead is a terrible choice for a fighting game. He fits in on an aesthetic level but character-wise he’s wrong for it. Pinhead doesn’t fight. He talks, he manipulates…sure he has his chains but that’s really it. He’s not a hands-on kind of character. When you think of iconic horror characters getting into some fisticuff action he’s really one of the last that are going to come to mind.

  • I Am Colossus

Spawn, Michael Myers, Pumpkinhead, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Dr. Giggles, Tarman, The Killer Clowns from Outerspace, Dr. Satan and/or Tiny, Pluto (the hills have eyes), Chucky (he’d be fast and could use surrounding areas for creative attacks), Kratos was an awesome choice, RoboCop and the T-800 or T-1000

  • Omar

A xenomorph (Aliens), Spawn, Predator, Jason Voorhees, Guts from the Berserk ( not everyone would agree but he’s an awesome fighter would have some cool moves)

  • Omar

A xenomorph (Aliens), Spawn, Predator, Jason Voorhees, Guts from the Berserk ( not everyone would agree but he’s an awesome fighter would have some cool moves)

  • Robert Adams

Pinhead would be ideal, i can see the fatality now, raises arms, the cube appears and solves itself, next all your favorite cenobytes appear along with the spinning torture column and they all proceed to tear the victim’s soul apart

  • Jocifer666

Oh my god. Pinhead needs to be in this game :).

  • Jahluis

Oderus is an obvious choice, but you cant have horror without, Leatherface, sweet tooth from twisted metal, jeepers kreepers, nemesis from resident evil, the crypt keeper! , aaaaaaand…. Wait for it…. LORD OF DARKNESS!!!! From legend. Oh yeah i went there.

  • Adam Clifton

Pinhead is a great choice. Freddy was in the last one so I doubt they’d re-use him again even if it were the Englund version. Apart from the obvious Jason Voorhees suggestion which would be a great idea, why didn’t you think of Victor Crowley (Hatchet)? Or Leatherface?

    • I mentioned at the end of the article that I was purposefully excluding the more obvious choices, because that’d make for a boring list.

I know I’ll probably be crucified for saying this, but I’m not at all a fan of the Hatchet films, so Crowley didn’t even come to mind. I know, it’s blasphemy, but I just don’t like them.

  • Evan3

There is but one horror icon Mortal Kombat needs, and that icon is currently working at S-Mart. Yes, how the hell has Earth-realm not recruited Ash Williams to defend it from these freaks from another dimension. Also, how great would a chainsaw hand and BOOMstick be in Mortal Kombat.
And if MK characters need to have witticisms. All I know is when Ash wins, we all get to say “hail to the king, baby!”

  • JayGatsby

I’d like to see Machete in MKX

  • Edwin Lugo

  • Flu-Like Symptoms

    Jason Voorhees
    Michael Myers
    Freddy Krueger (Englund)
Leatherface (I mean c’mon, this is a DUH moment. Imagine that chainsaw colliding with all that meat!)

  • thagodzombie

    Ragan McNeil

  • huntermc

You know what would be awesome is if rather than just a few random horror icons as bonus characters, they just run with it and make a whole damn game. If they could ever work out the licensing arrangements, I’d love to see a game based on the MK engine with Freddy, Jason, Michael, Leatherface, Pinhead, Chucky, and all of your horror favorites, plus their respective killing grounds for the stages. They’ve done a great job with the story mode in the last MK game and Injustice, so I’d love to see how they could incorporate that as well.

    • I just want to see Chunky and the Leprechaun go at it. I feel like that’d be the best damn thing that’s ever happened to video games.

    • Victor

One could dream, I’ve always said this and hoped for it…. I know it comes down to licensing arrangements for company’s should know they would all profit from this $$$$$ since it always comes down to money. But this would be the ultimate, in a perfect world would this happen.

  • Porty Guil

jeffrey dahmer, ed gein, norman bates, john wayne gacy, jack the ripper

  • Mr. Awesome

    Rawhead Rex. DO IT.

  • Justin Smith

  • ragethorn

    Pennywise. *drops the mic*

    • Evan3

Ash *picks up your mic and returns it to you*

      • ragethorn

        • Evan3

You can’t seriously not know who Ashley J. Williams is. He’s only slaughtered dozens of Deadites across three fantastic films and an upcoming TV series. Hail to the king, baby!

          • ragethorn

No, I know who Ash is. I just think it’s a fucking stupid request. Sorry.

          • Evan3

How so? He fights evil from another dimension (thus, perfectly equipped to take on those from the NetherRealm), has all the quips needed, can fight with his chainsaw hand or boomstick, and can take a shit ton of punishment. To not be exxxcited about the prospect of Ash in Mortal Kombat is to not love horror.

  • Ariel Baldo

Am I the only who doesn’t understand the love for Babadook? :s

    • texas evil

Dont understand ‘too much’. It feels like a tv movie at times.

    • Warren Jansen Van Rensburg

The more and more I think about it. The more I realized how much I really did not like it…

  • texas evil

Sam is a little too ‘short’. Mick doesn’t seem to fit in the supernatural world of Mortal Kombat. Pinhead is always destined for Mk, his fatality would be bloody epic.
May i suggest Pennywise, Candyman, Dren (from Splice), The Fly in Cronenberg version and someone here mention The Thing. Goddamn yes!

  • Warren Jansen Van Rensburg

Id love for some female horror movie villains for a change.
There is not many mainstream ones but heres some thoughts

Ginger from ginger snaps. Could be awesome she could transform into a werewolf for her fatality!
Carrie not necessarily a villain. But her moves would be AWESOME!
    Regan (Exorcist)
    Samara Morgan
    The Gudge
    Tiffany (chucky)
Angelique (hellraiser) Just because shes one of the scariest females in horror I have ever seen O_O
Scylla the Nymph (Even though shes from a tragically awful movie I think she would be such an awesome character to play)

Let me know what female villains you think should be added ;D

  • Frank Lloyd Jr.

    Pumpkinhead and Rawhead Rex!

  • Cheshire TrollCat

A little late, but id like to see Jeepers Creepers, the Alien, or the girl from Species. Jason is a given.

  • Guest

Leatherhead, Michael Myers and the Leprechaun (the leprechaun is a badass fighter despite his size).

  • Thomas Gray

Leatherface, Michael Myers and the Leprechaun (the leprechaun is a badass fighter despite his size, check out the bit in Leprechaun in the hood where he rips a guys heart out).

  • jason

    wishmaster djinn fits!

  • Strogg

I’ve been wanting to see Pinhead in a Mortal Kombat game forever!

  • Pops Ghostly

Otis Firefly -OR- Choptop, Maniac Cop, The Tall Man, Ash, The Toxic Avenger, Pennywise, William Berkin, Norma(n) Bates.
