You Need to Watch This Debut Trailer for ‘Hunger’

One trailer. One trailer is all it took for a game called Hunger to climb its way to the near-top of my most anticipated list. I’m not sure if developer Tarsier Studios has imbued this trailer with black magic in a Siren-like effort to lure in unsuspecting passersby, or if they’re just ridiculously good at crafting games that appeal to me directly, but I am sure that it no longer matters. I’m hooked.

I’m going to let you watch its debut trailer, then I’ll give you some details.

The premise behind Hunger sounds simple enough. Our mission is to help a young girl named Six as she tries to escape from The Maw — a hellish, monster-infested world that resembles an over-sized, deformed dollhouse. It’s an atmospheric horror platformer they refer to as a “suspense-adventure” game, because “there will be plenty of both.”

Hunger was made possible thanks to a €200,000 development support fund Tarsier Studios received from the Nordic Game and Creative Europe programs. It’s also another reason why I love indie developers, because they give us stuff that looks like this. Granted, it’s nowhere near completion, but so long as the final product doesn’t stray too far from the footage above, we may have a truly unique new horror game to look forward to.

I’ve been trying to think of an adequate way to describe Hunger, but all I’ve been able to come up with is it looks sort of like LittleBigPlanet, if a copy of the game had returned with the starship Event Horizon after it got lost in that freaky hell dimension. Shaped by agony, torment and the clawed hands of Satan himself. I’m still working on it.

The art style is what immediately drew me in. This is a gorgeous game, with visuals that remind me a lot of Among the Sleep’s similarly quirky look.

That’s all I’ve got for now, but expect to hear more from Hunger in the very near future.

It looks like a colourful version of Limbo, but in a steampunk / Oddworld kind of world. It looks very cool.

I was going to say this look so much like Limbo, but maybe a little bit more three dimensional while still a side scroller.

Feels like a mix between Alice in Wonderland and Coraline. Now this is a game i would like to play.
