Your Picks for the Best & Worst Horror Games of 2014!

Our sixth annual FEAR Awards is just about over. I asked what you considered to be the best and worst horror games of the year, and more of you answered than ever before. Now that the votes are in and democracy has again been achieved, all that’s left for us to do is scour over the results. Every one of these games won or lost by the votes given to or kept from them by you, the community that makes Bloody Disgusting the #1 site for all things spooky scary.

I’m sure most of you have skipped this opener and are already half-way through the winners, so I’m going to shut my face right up and let you look over this year’s winners.

I’ll just crown Alien Isolation my personal horror game of the year. Nothing scared the shits out of me like that did.

  • LoveAnimation

The Evil Within is my favorite horror game of 2014.
Its an awesome and very fun game and i have beaten it 3 times already and i usually dont feel like beating a game again until long after i beat it the first time.
P.T, Alien Isolation, Among The Sleep and Outlast Whistleblower were also awesome and very scary games this year.

  • Sick_skwerl

As always, loved the FEAR awards, Adam! Can’t believe that Alien didn’t win anything, but c’est la vie

    • Chance LeBoeuf

Alien:Isolation won our hearts. That’s what matters friend.

      • Phendranah

        This guy gets it!

    • I was surprised, too!

  • Chance LeBoeuf

Did a bunch of pre-teens who watch tons Let’s Play videos on Youtube do the voting this year?

    • Brodequin

      Well said…

    • Jaime Andres Esparza

It’s funny because FNAF actually deserves at least 3 out of the 5 awards it got.

      • TetchyEquation

        Im gonna say this now
The FNAF Community is shit, the toxic kind
The games arent that bad, not GOTY Meaterial but There still pretty great
        Best Monster: Definatley
        Most Originality: Yep, thats fair
Best New Ip: I think so
Best Indie: I can understand that
GOTY: You have got to be kidding me
FNAF shouldent have even been a contender for that one
Alein Isolation, The Evil Within, soooooo many games deserve GOTY more then FNAF does

    • Domino D

How funny that you mention that. Two of my daughters, both teenage, were talking about how “scary” and “cool” this game was. I was kind of surprised they knew about it. I asked if they played it, and their response was, “No, we saw teens playing it on youtube”. SMH

    • LoveAnimation

It seems to me like most people have never played any of the recent horror games and have only watched videos about them on youtube.
Many people seems to have never played any horror games at all.
      Only watched videos about it.

  • Phendranah

More like Five Awards at Freddie’s…
Ah well. The community has spoken I guess. Alien still destroyed all in my heart and gave me hope for the future of the franchise. All in all a great year for horror. Bring on 2015!

  • Jason L.

Honestly I’m not gonna lie this whole scrolling up, down, and rolling my eyeballs everywhere to find out what the award is and which game it belongs to is not my thing. Shame on you for bad UX.

And I’m surprised Laura didn’t win Best Monster. She was one freaky chick.

  • ragethorn

    Meh. Alien Isolation destroys Outlast.

  • SaltSlasher

Well…. 5 nights at freddy’s now seems over-rated. I kept thinking Evil Within was gonna pass with flying colors, but I am definitely shocked by results.

  • Jaime Andres Esparza

I don’t exactly agree with GOTY, but it is a refreshingly original new IP. So that’s at least 2 awards it deserves, best Indie, without a doubt. Best monster, probably Alien but eh, kinda tired of classics getting the awards automatically. But Evil Within is the same ol’, same ol, and Alien was great but backtracked waaay too much. I’m happy for Scott (developer of FNAF).

  • Strogg

My 2014 Horror GOTY was Alien: Isolation.

  • ThunderDragoon

    Well, that was anticlimactic lol.

  • Jonny_anonymous

5 Nights isn’t even that good. In fact I’m willing to say it’s a pretty bad game.

    • Grimphantom

No worries you’re not the only one

      • jakeb

Sucks for you guys there’s only a few people that hate it and your 1 of them

(I don’t like FnaF 1 as much but I love the back story and FnaF 2 is amazing and FnaF 3 from what I have seen will make even people who hate the game love it!)

Not trying to be mean but just saying there isn’t much people who hate the game that I know of (and I know a lot of places)

        • Grimphantom

Who gives a rat’s ass, you like it good for you pal but i thought they gave the game too much hype, especially when they released the sequel in just a few months having the same crap from the first.

        • Peter Bodenham

I found it quite dry tbh and no scares at all.

    • Dick Pickman

I like horror movies, and I like the idea of a first person horror video game. I’m not really a gamer, but FNAF looked interesting and did not require any dedicated equipment so I gave it a a try. Where is the game play? Is there an objective? Is there a strategy? Anyone could program a random jump-scare generator that arbitrarily declares “game over”. Like I said I’m not interested in investing the time and money to play the really good games, but FNAF didn’t interest me at all.

    • Zarthur

And I’m willing to say that you are a faggot and need to shut your ass up!

  • FUCK YOU

Wow, FNAF won over Alien Isolation ?

  • darkMite

My GotY was Alien: Isolation. I thought the Five Nights at Freddy’s games were nifty little titles but neither of them were near GoTY.

    • Zarthur

Your opinion doesn’t mean a damn thing!

    • TetchyEquation

The games arent that bad, not GOTY Meaterial but There still pretty great

  • Conan

Jump scares in movies are considered cheap, yet in games it seems its a winner for horror fans. lol.

    • LoveAnimation

Yea kinda weird that horror fans hate on jumpscares so much nowadays but the FNAF games are so popular.
I think its mostly the hardcore horror fans that dont like jumpscares but the more casual horror fans loves them.

      • MapleSirrah

The horror in FNAF isn’t from the jumpscares, it’s from all of the build-up and tension from the situation and atmosphere. That’s what makes the games work so well. Games that solely rely on jumpscares and don’t take the time to actually build a scary environment are what is annoying to me. I felt like FNAF was much more carefully thought out and better designed, and so was able to do more than that.

Now, more hardcore horror players are harder to scare with an atmosphere alone, so I can understand how the games don’t seem as good to them, but even so, mechanically it’s different from how most horror games are played, so getting that unknown factor does make the games more scary, and at the very least interesting to play to me.

    • Zarthur

Yes, just the way it should be.

  • Taboo

Wow none for Alien? I has disappointed :[

  • Megaonan

I am not saying that Five nights at Fredies is a bad game, but i definetly think that it didnt deserve so many wins. More acknowledgement to Alien and Evil within would have been nice. Also dont understand why P.T. was even up in any category, i know it was scary as fuck, but it was just a playable teaser. By that logic, why not put demos there as well…

    • Zarthur

How about voting next time instead of telling people what to vote for. Are people stupid these days that they have to complain about things after the deed is done when they had the power to change it before?

      • Megaonan

I did vote, in all the categories… Thanks for input.

    • TetchyEquation

      Im gonna say this now

Alein Isolation, The Evil Within, soooooo many games deserve GOTY more then FNAF does

  • Samael

This is seriously one of the worsts lists ever. Who the hell voted? FNAF is OK but it’s really not that scary, and it’s replay value is terrible. P.T. isn’t even a game, it was a teaser for a game — that’s like saying a movie is good based off of a trailer. Does everyone here watch Disney movies and just dabble in horror?

    • Lucas Fernandez

“that’s like saying a movie is good based off of a trailer”
i’m dying because the laugh man hahahahahah

    • boxcar182

What’re you doing in P.T? You’re playing it. There for it is a game. It was scarier than most horror games that do come out at full retail.

      • Shuzer

I think it’s more because it’s not a full game. It’s just a playable teaser. Although I agree it’s a lot better than the rest of what we got this year.

      • Samael

Again, I’ll place my logic here: what are you doing with a trailer? You are watching it! Therefore it’s a movie. Oh wait….no it’s not. It’s still only a trailer…

    • Zarthur

      Shut the hell up!

      • Samael

Troll much? Apparently you don’t like other peoples opinions.

    • Zack

Don’t forget the fact they put Diablo III in the running as a horror game…

  • McGilli

When GOOD horror movies are released to theatres – and do very poorly…. or cheap PG-13 jump scare horror movies are released to theatres – and do crazy good…

You know why now…. If people vote for FNAF as a good horror game – it reflects the poor showings for good horror at theatres…

    • Lucas Fernandez

there is nothing you can do against the 13 to 16 years old kids ahhahahahaahah!!! we like paranormal activity movies and Five nights at freddy’s HAHAHAHAHAHAH Rat Kid Power!!!………………this is just a joke about young kids, i’m not one of them, i’m 22 i hate paranormal activity movies (1st one is ok) and i don’t like FnaF,cheers

    • Zarthur

And you need to shut your ass up before I find out where you live and shove your mouth full of dirt and bury you alive in your backyard.,

  • Lucas Fernandez

i will light this list on fire……….oh no wait my monitor!!!

  • Brodequin

    This is weird…

    • LoveAnimation

In what way is it weird?

      • Brodequin

        FNAF winner in five categories…

        • TetchyEquation

  • josh

Fnaf is a joke. This list is a joke. It was voted on by trolls and little kids who know nothing about video games. Mommy and daddy didn’t want to buy them alien: isolation or the evil within. So they play this pos phone title. Go back to your gamefly. Believe you are a gamer because you play one or two games and leave the voting to people who actually play games and are more in touch with the industry.

    • aFriendlyAgenda

Your an angry little snot aint cha.
Puberty is frustrating, but you’ll grow out of it.

      • josh

I’m 30 first off. Secondly, I’m just saying that kids who can’t afford to play anything that isn’t free shouldn’t vote on something that they haven’t played. I find it funny how upset you got from my comment. It must have hit a little too close for comfort. If you disagree then simply state that, but to get upset and resort to name calling is just childish and immature. It also shows an ego problem that you can’t take comments but feel a need to sadly attempt an insult. I feel sorry for you.

        • Brodequin

Yep, you cannot share your own opinion. It always makes someone upset… πŸ˜‰

        • Evi

“If you disagree then simply state that, but to get upset and resort to name calling is just childish and immature.”

“This list is a joke. It was voted on by trolls and little kids who know nothing about video games.”

          Uh-huh….

          • josh

Troll is a term. Little kids is just that little kids. I wasn’t calling people names. Like this person who commented and called me a faggot. Check yourself.

          • dingo

both troll and little kids are name calling. When you said trolls and little kids you meant it in a derogatory sense in order to demean and debase those who voted. That seems like name calling to me. Now it’s my term to name call by calling you a hypocrite. Good day, sir.

          • Dave

Ok, so let me get this straight…
You’re a 30 year old man, that is raging about Five Nights at Freddy’s winning most of the awards.
It’s probably one of the more original horror games right now. It has very unique characters, an amazing hidden plot, and original gameplay, unique to each title.
But if you wanna stand around and rage, don’t call yourself 30 years old.

          • josh

Dead rising and manhunt did the set amount of days idea, so that’s not original. Naughty bear is about a killer teddy bear. Not original either. That’s just off the top of my head. One of the most original games out my ass. It’s a rip off.

          • CRowe1996

Dave’s explaination is exactly what FNAF is… an amazing game with a storyline that isn’t even done!

          • Peter Bodenham

it’s a snore fest dude, deal with it

    • Zarthur

      Shut up you faggot!

      • josh

How dare you. That is just rude and offensive.

    • Radioactive Viking Skeleton

Evil Within was bollocks. Horribly paced and lame story. It only had graphics going for it. I’ll never see quicktime events as scary, other than from a design stand point. Also FNaF was a PC title first.

      • Taylor

Yeah, it was very disappointing. I was looking forward to it so much…

    • Zack

While I’m not going to defend FnaF, the fact you try to say The Evil Within is any better of a game is laughable at best.
And at least FnaF has a low price tag going for it.

      • josh

Right cause we should base how good a game is by how cheap it is.

        • CRowe1996

Oh Boohoo! FNAF has a way better storyline than any game as of 2014… and it’s not even done yet! Give Scott some credit, it’s only one guy working on this masterpiece of a game!

    • TetchyEquation

    • abdul basir

      opinion?,ever heard of it

  • James Daniel Massey

Wait, so how can Silent Hills even be judge when the game hasn’t even come out yet?

    • It’s for the P.T. demo. I put Silent Hills in there so folks who weren’t familiar with P.T. would still know what it is.

      • Stamkos93

The fact that a demo is a nominee is laughable and asinine

        • The fact that PT was scarier and more memorable than any other game on that list is more asinine.

        • Kristen

have you played the demo at all? Or even watched people play it? It’s super creepy.

          • Stamkos93

I have and I enjoyed it but I didn’t expect a demo to be the best among the group of games hahaha

        • Taylor

I’d normally agree with you but P.T. was incredibly impressive as far as a demo is concerned and better than most full horror games that came out last year. Sad, but true in my opinion.

  • boxcar182

Is The Forest scary? I am really looking forward to it on the PS4.

    • DrewHamster

I haven’t played it in awhile so a ton of changes have been made, but I thought it was pretty creepy early on. It didn’t take long to get used to it though and most of the intensity or suspense came from being on the brink of death and hurrying to find something to eat or a bandage and not wanting to die.

  • aFriendlyAgenda

I would have nominated Alien:Isolation for most disappointing.

Not because it was the worst game of the year, but that it failed my expectations more then any other with its 1991 level design and gameplay.

The graphics and visual detail were nice though.
I wish I could have enjoyed them more.

    • Have to disagree with you there. I think Alien Isolation was really good. Yeah, you didn’t get to really have a try shooting the aliens, but the atmosphere was eerie and so damn frightening. Playing it with all the lights out certainly scared me anyway!

      • LoveAnimation

Yea the only thing about Alien Isolation i was very disappointed about was the story.
It felt like almost nothing interesting ever happened in the story or with the characters and it was almost only about escaping the space station and nothing else.

      • Lucas Fernandez

not everyone is like you man, i find Alien Isolation very good but not as a horror game, i had no moments of scare, the story is not strong enough, enemies is for laugh i mean, humans and droids? the alien is not for laugh at all but for me the game is just about going through the ship in stealth,i don’t mind not have a machine gun to kill the alien, is good to avoiding him and the IA is really good, is not easy to escape from him even if you select easy as difficulty, is a challenging game but is not a horror game at least for me, sound is good but the atmosphere is not suggestively enough to make me fear about the alien or any other enemy, just my opinion

      • aFriendlyAgenda

“I think Alien Isolation was really good.”

        Thats cool.
        A lot of people did.

I’m glad it was successful enough to justify further games in a survival horror vein instead of more space marine shooters.

There’s a good chance that the next one will be even better.

    • Alien wasn’t great IMO, and its first few hours are a total snoozefest, but it definitely wasn’t the most disappointing for me.

  • LosLockos

Hint, next time use a simple Headline or include the award title to the graphic. To the outcome – really glad FNAF won so many. I mean, considered that it’s a one man-team and the concept is just brillant

    • TetchyEquation

  • Stamkos93

Woah slow down there voters a game that only consists of 5 levels and a bonus day isnt Game of the year worthy. Last of us and Evil Within a far better. A teddy bear isnt scary either. Fnaf is a 6/10

    • I agree about TLoU, but generally remasters don’t count toward these types of awards. Evil Within was also really hit or miss. The gore was there, but the game still felt a bit weak everywhere else.

      • Stamkos93

Ah I didn’t know the remasters don’t count. Evil Within I liked it aside from the numerous amount of issues. I definitely enjoyed it more than monitoring cameras haha

        • I didn’t much care for the gameplay of FNaF either. Not a bad game to watch videos of, but the gameplay isn’t appealing in any way. Even though it wasn’t a full game, PT was still miles above anything else horror related last year.

          • Stamkos93

Agreed, much more amusement watching Markiplier play than myself. I’m looking forward to Silent Hills

  • Neverending Nightmares didn’t make it on to any top 3’s?

  • Sam

Glad FNAF 2 won so many awards. Also best game… *cough cough* but I would have liked to see COD on the list or in a top 3 *sigh*. Oh well, beggars can’t be choosers.

    • Pangalaktichki

The only scary thing about COD is how it still manages to rake insane amounts of cash being almost a rehash every year

    • Taylor

what does COD have to do with horror?

  • Radioactive Viking Skeleton

How did the evil within win so many awards? Gore i get, but it felt clunky and had no sense of pacing what so ever.

  • Armando Zertuche

Why did Silent Hill win best? It’s not even out yet, and we can’t judge by the demo… um, wtf.

  • Cheshire TrollCat

I never hated five nights at freddies until now, this piece of shit robbed real games of there credit.

  • str8jacketx

An unreleased game on the best of 2014 list, scariest demo, sure – but game? WTF dudes.

  • Zack

Proof that 2014 in horror was absolutely droll and uneventful… I think the entire genre needs a “reboot”…

  • Kelly Andrus

Do y’all even Silent Hill? The Silent Hills P.T. was a standalone project unrelated to the upcoming title. It’s likely included because its a complete “game”, though it’s less of a game and more an exploration of the medium and the capabilities of the console. It’s not like there were heaps of quality titles out this year anywho.

  • Julius Yeung

    ALIEN ISOLATION!!

    • Chris Courtois

Yup… this is a total BS list we have here! Isolation even made GOTY on non horror lists. sham… that’s what you get when you run a GOTY poll off rabid fanbois. LOL

      • Julius Yeung

I really did not like The Evil Within as well.
Played my friends copy to give it a try and was not impressed… Boring and unintersting. It was right after I played Alien Isolation. It was a damn shooter!! Nothing horrifying about it. I gave up after a few chapters.

i got halfway through alien isolation and then traded it in. Was hoping it would start to become interesting, but it just didnt. Mind you, that’s whats great about being individuals, we all like different things πŸ™‚

Yeah all these games on the list weren’t scary and were almost all just jump scare based. We really need some real horror games but I don’t think we ever will.

      we need “real” horror games
Horror is different to different people

nope, horror is pretty well defined, “fear” on the other hand is very diffrent from person to person
