Vote Here for the Best & Worst Horror Games of 2014!

When I started the FEAR Awards back in 2009, I didn’t even bother announcing the nominees, and the winners of each category were chosen by me. I should’ve just called them God-King Adam’s Personal Preference Awards. Thankfully, it didn’t take me long to realize how lame that was, so in its second year I started staggering the categories to give each batch of nominees more time in the spotlight, and left the picking and choosing of each winner to you.

This has worked so far, but it isn’t perfect. The problem is you have lives, and sometimes life stuff can keep you from embracing Democracy’s pillowy bosom. To keep that from happening to you, vote below before I announce the winners on Friday, January 16.

Isolation was the most disappointing IMO.

    • Totally a valid opinion! I’d only say that while Isolation isn’t perfect, even if I hated the gameplay, the fact that it’s as genuine and respectful to the source material as any video game has been or ever will be keeps it leagues above 2014’s worst horror games. But that’s also just my opinion!

    • Cheshire TrollCat

Your definitely in the minority on that one.

      • Chandler Of-Adelaide

Seemingly so are people who dislike Justin Beiber or the Kardashians πŸ˜›

        • Cheshire TrollCat

          I’d say that one is 50 50.

    • DaylightAmy

Not sure if you are the minority on that one. I think we’re a less vocal group but there is definitely a substantial group that was expecting more from Isolation!

  • Chance LeBoeuf

I seriously think The Evil Within should be a part of the disappointing category. And for anyone wanting see why this humble horror lover feels this way, read on.

People like to call Shinji Mikami the “master of survival horror” in the video game world, but he’s really not that good at the horror part. Subtlety is a term that absolutely escapes him.

I really wanted to love this game, but it’s just so bland and uninspired. The only part that really stuck out for me was the design of Reborn Laura. The game itself is basically RE4 ,but without all the unintentional/intentional camp hand in hand with the over the top violence that made it work.

The characters could not be any more generic themselves. (like how Anson Mount was involved though) The plot also tries to do a lot of stuff, but in the end I felt as if it was pretty pointless.

Generic and shallow are the terms I would use to define this game as a whole. It’s this quilt patchwork of a bunch of different horror concepts and imagery that never focuses enough to bring it to its full potential. Everything stays at the shallow end of the pool. Not to mention, the game design in general has a sometimes pretty arbitrary approach that doesn’t even make gameplay a saving grace.

It was something I gave a couple of chances to, but I walked away hating it more and more. It was the worst horror game of 2014.

There was some chapters that felt scary and creepy to me first time i beat the game so i dont think it fails at it.
That the game got lots of similar stuff from different kinds of horror stuff is not a bad thing to me because i dont think something needs to be original to be great and horror does not need to be subtle to be scary.
Some of the scariest horror games i have ever played are not really trying to be subtle most of the time but they are still extremely scary.
Also The Evil Within is not as scary as we hoped it would be yes but its still an awesome and extremely fun game to play and i have already beaten it 3 times.
The only big thing about the game i was disappointed about was that some stuff in the story never got explained and that some stuff and characters could have been developed more.

    • Brodequin

      Ye, yes and YES!

    • Cloud_ST

It could’ve been a lot better plot-wise and some of the later stages felt like they didn’t belong in the game (the urban areas), but I had a great time with it. The weapons felt powerful, the bosses were good and the atmosphere was great, most of the time anyways. For me it’s an 8/10. I hope they get to make a sequel where they polish all those details.

    • DaylightAmy

It was fairly heavy on the gore and incredibly weak at intriguing the player in any way. The most bland horror experience I’ve ever had… making it not a horror experience at all!

    • Robert Fulton

I’d have preferred less cheap jumpscares, less unwinnable situations & more puzzles. Oh and for the chapter based system to go away. Some of the parts in this game seem geared up to kill you so they can showcase the work they put into Seb’s death animations.

    • Ryan Lennon

Worst horror game of 2014? You’ve missed out on a lot of crap this year.

  • Sick_skwerl

Alien: Isolation was my favorite game this year.

    • Phendranah

Same. I was blown away by it.

    • Ryan Lennon

No love for Walking Dead is making me sad.

  • LoveAnimation

The Evil Within and P.T are the best horror games of 2014 in my opinion.
The Evil Within is the most fun game i have played that year and i have already beaten it 3 times and P.T is the by far scariest thing i have played in 2014.

  • Chandler Of-Adelaide

These all need an “other” option. At least most disappointing does because I’ve not played any listed for that category but I have played Alien: Isolation and that was shit. And from what I’ve seen of Evil Within, that too was a load of crap in every way.

    • I get what you mean, but in this case that kind of option wouldn’t work since an actual game needs to win each category. If you haven’t played any of the nominees, I’d just skip voting in that category.

      • Chandler Of-Adelaide

The other could have an input box. That way people tick other, type in the name of the game and voila.

        • Ryan Lennon

People type stuff in different ways, there would be 5 categories for one game probably.

  • ThunderDragoon

I abused the Outlast option lol. I just love that game so damn much.

  • Brodequin

I’ll say it again: Neverending Nightmares is my personal Best Horror Game of 2014! And F.E.A.R. Online (for EVERYTHING!!!) together with The Evil Within (mr Chance LeBoeuf explained it in comment below, my opinion is identical) Worst Horror Games of 2014… “God-King Adam’s Personal Preference Awards”… hehehe…

  • darkMite

Overall best horror games of the year for me: The Forest, Alien: Isolation, Outlast, P.T.

    • Ryan Lennon

P.T. is the only one that belongs there.

  • The evil within was such a disappointment. Outlast: whistleblower was fantastic and the stakes were turned up to 11!

    • DaylightAmy

Glad I’m not the only one who felt that way!!

  • Benny Pzico Pavilion

P.T. is easily the scariest of them. Not the best one 2014 though..

    • Ryan Lennon

      Why not the best?!

  • Uchith Idunil

Outlast: whistleblower the horror master and none of other got that chill..OH MY HEART BEAT WAS INCREASING LIKE A HELL WHEN GROOM COMING..::!!!!!!

    • Ryan Lennon

If you don’t die repeatedly and manage to coast on the edge of death then its truly terrifying, dying resets the tension sadly. Just like all other horror games.

  • Hello guys
Thank you for adding DreadOut on the list, it’s an honor for us XD

    • Ryan Lennon

I’ve only heard bad things about it and given how easy it is to get stuck I wouldn’t but it anywhere besides most disappointing. Almost as disappointing as the fact Fatal Frame V won’t be coming to the US.

  • ThatOneZombie

  • Her name is Lucy (P.T). πŸ˜‰

    • Brodequin

Lisa Playable Trailer? Strange name… πŸ˜‰

  • ragethorn

Guys and gals, between P.T., Walking Dead S2, Alien Isolation & even Last Of Us Remastered, it’s been a good f’n year for us.

    • Ryan Lennon

I wouldn’t call The Walking Dead or The Last of Us horror games, I’d just call them amazing, emotional games that happen to have zombies.

  • Lucas Rogers

Horror is not about gore. Horror is not about multiplayer. Horror is not about action, shooting. I feel like so many games, and this site, have forgotten that.

  • ‘Best Multiplayer’ shouldn’t be a category. It ruins survival horror.

    • Ryan Lennon

It works if you don’t have voice chat. It can either add supreme intelligence and unpredicatability to the monster or make you laugh with your friends a bunch which is great but missing the point.

  • And anyone who hasn’t play P.T., please play P.T. It’s unbelievably unsettling.

    • Brodequin

I didn’t play it. Is not working on PC πŸ˜‰

      • Ryan Lennon

That game needs to come out on PC, now I play on PlayStation so I’ll be fine either way but it would be a crime if it doesn’t.

  • DaylightAmy

I wanted to vote for P.T. more but the truth is the gameplay was much more frustrating in my opinion than any of the others (i.e. finishing it without looking it up was aggravating) in spite of the stellar graphics, atmosphere and scares… I had to take into account the game element as well and so most of my votes ended up with FNAF and Whistleblower for simply being more FUN apart from scary as well.

  • Brodequin

I still don’t understand what P.T. doing here; it’s Playable Trailer (P.T.) not full game…

    • Ryan Lennon

Which just happens to be the prologue to the next Silent Hill game which is awesome, the most terrifying game of the year, very original idea’s and just an amazing game in general besides the puzzles which made no sense.

      • Brodequin

Should be in category Horror Teaser of The Year hehehe. I’m sure full game will be absolutely great…

  • SaltSlasher

Hate to sound like a huge poser, but I haven’t beaten enough of these to make a proper selection in the majority of these. And I don’t want to go based off what I randomly think based off the small info i know about them…….but, I guess I got to vote.

    • Ryan Lennon

Same here, I still have The Evil Within on the shelf but haven’t touched it yet.
